William Piper English Cello c.2000 (EN023) SOLD

William Piper English Cello c.2000 (EN023)

William Piper has been hand-making and repairing string instruments since 1965, producing over 700 instruments over the course of his career. He recently retired after spending many years at a workshop in the Jinny Ring Craft Centre in Worcestershire, England.

He apprenticed under Sidney Evans in the craft of violin-making and worked for him for 12 years before branching out on his own, going on to train and mentor around 100 students himself.

William was very particular in his wood selection and attention to detail in his work; his instruments are close copies of classical makers made in the traditional style using hand tools. His instruments are enjoyed by players all over the world. You can learn more about William’s work by watching this short film: https://vimeo.com/92852169

This is a lovely hand-made instrument, crafted around 2000 and bearing William’s label of the ‘Victoria Violin Company at Jinny Ring’ signed by him and fitted with the original stamped bridge.

It is very well constructed instrument of a lovely flamed maple and quality spruce and varnished in a very attractive reddish-brown color. William took extra time with this cello to carve an ebony crown over the button on the back. It is in excellent condition with no repairs and has been set up with new, professional level Larsen Magnacore Arioso strings.

The sound is clear, warm and resonant and the instrument is very easy to play.

Length of back is 745mm. High resolution photos available on request.
