Geo. Steeger German Cello c. 1895 (GE013) SOLD
This wonderful old cello was made in Germany prior to 1900 for the Steeger company of London. George Frederick Steeger was an importer of premium pianos from Germany. A 1898 advertisement describes the company as ‘the Sole Representative of Fifteen Renowned German High-Class Piano Makers’ with a ‘Total Production of 11,000 Instruments’. As was the practice at the time, piano retailers might also offer a small selection of string instruments for sale, this cello would have been one of those offerings. Steeger would have cherished his reputation as being a retailer of quality and would have only put his name on the better instruments. The Steeger company went out of business in 1900.
The cello has been restored at some point with a crack in the table having been repaired and a new neck fitted. There are no cracks to the ribs or back. There is a stock number (1591) handwritten on the label and stamped into the lower rib. The length of back is 765mm. The instrument is a delight to play, responsive with an attractive buttery, mature tone.
This is a great opportunity to acquire an antique cello with a historical connection at a reasonable price.
