E.H. Roth, Bubenreuth 1977 (GE020) - SOLD

E.H. Roth, Bubenreuth 1977 (GE020)

E.H. Roth is one of the most recognized and respected names in German violin making.

The company was founded by Ernst Heinrich Roth and his cousin Gustav August Ficker in Markneukirchen, Germany in 1902. Ernst had learned traditional German violin making from his father, but went onto to further his studies in Austria, Hungary, Russia & France. He became a highly skilled craftsman; one of Germany’s finest makers and his master instruments (especially those from the 1920’s & 30’s) are very highly prized.

The Roth workshop was tremendously successful and had a reputation for quality, each instrument going through an extensive inspection process and numbered before being released for sale.

Ernst’s son Ernst Heinrich Roth II immigrated to the US in 1921 to promote the company’s wears and in the process became one of the leading instrument dealers in North America with his company, Scherl & Roth

Ernst’s other son Gustav Albert stayed on in Germany to run the workshop.

Soviet control over East Germany led to the family fortune being expropriated and like many violin making families at the time, the Roth family moved to Bubenreuth in West Germany to rebuild their business. Bubenreuth is where this instrument was made in 1977.

This cello exhibits all the characteristics of a Roth – impeccably made and from good materials. Typical of Roth’s, this instrument has good power & projection and brilliance of sound in the upper register.

There is a Roth label along with the name and a serial number branded internally. It is in good condition, with no cracks or damage although there is surface wear and tear consistent with age.

The length of back is 753mm. High resolution photos available on request.
