Rembert Wurlitzer, Mittenwald c.1970 (GE030) - SOLD

Rembert Wurlitzer, Mittenwald c.1970 (GE030) - SOLD

This is a really nice, reliable old German cello in very good condition, made around the turn of the 20th Century in the Saxony region.

This cello was made in the Mittenwald area of Bavaria, Germany for the Rembert Wurlitzer Company of New York.

Rembert Wurlitzer was the grandson of Rudoph, the founder of the famous piano & organ manufacturer; Wurlitzer of Chicago. In 1949 he departed from the family business and set up shop in Manhattan buying, selling, authenticating and restoring fine stringed instruments and employing some of the country’s finest luthiers.

Wurlitzer’s reputation grew and the company became the preeminent violin shop in the US handling the majority of notable violin sales including those of the makers Stradivari, Guadagnini, Vuillaume & Serafin. It is thought that more than half of the documented Stradivari instruments (about 600) have passed through the Wurlitzer shop or workshop at some point. The company supplied instruments to the top players of the time. They finally closed its door is 1974. A certificate from the Wurlitzer Company is still recognized today as the industry’s gold standard.

Not all customers could afford the level of instrument that the company offered for sale and this cello was commissioned to fill that need. With such a prodigious reputation to maintain, the company only accepted fine workmanship.

This cello is very well made and in excellent condition. The only repair is a shim that we have added under the fingerboard to raise its angle for easier playing. It is a lovely deep red color and is set up well, being fitted with a new bridge, a Wittner tailpiece and Kaplan strings.

The sound is clear, precise, balanced and resonant. It is very easy to play with smooth access to clarity in the high register.

Wurlitzer Mittenwald cellos rarely come up for sale; this is a great opportunity to acquire one at a very fair price.

The length of back is 756mm, high resolution photos available on request.
