John Juzek ‘Master Art’, Prague 1931 (GE036) - $9,950 canadian

This is a really nice, reliable old German cello in very good condition, made around the turn of the 20th Century in the Saxony region.

The John Juzek firm was founded in New York in 1920 by Robert Juzek and named after his brother Janek, a violin maker in Prague. Early Juzek instruments were made in Janek’s workshop but demand soon outstripped supply so other Czech & German makers were commissioned to make instruments for export to the US under the Juzek name.

The firm, which eventually morphed in to the Metropolitan Music Company of NY, sold various levels of instrument for all players. This cello is modeled after Stradivari and displays the much sought after Master Art label; the label reserved for the highest quality instruments.

This particular cello was purchased in 1943 in St. Louis and played for many years in various orchestras in that area. It is in excellent condition with few repairs and has been set up with a new Wittner tailpiece, carbon fiber endpin and a new set of Kaplan strings.

It has a full, dark attractive sound with good resonance under the ear. It is very easy to play and forgiving.

The length of back is 755mm, high resolution photos available on request.
