English Cello - Early 19th C. (EN019) - SOLD
English Cello - Early 19th C. (EN019) SOLD
Old English cello made in the Amati style after a leading cello maker of the time – Thomas Kennedy of London (1784-1840). The cello is modeled on the Grand Amati pattern much admired by Kennedy and is typical of London work from this workshop of this period. It is unlabeled and is likely not from the Kennedy workshop but rather that of a contemporary or follower.
The instrument has had a full restoration with multiple repairs including sound post patches on the front and back, other table & rib crack repairs, a neck graft and a shim added under the fingerboard. The restoration work is of the highest quality, some of the best I have seen, with all repairs stable and as unobtrusive as possible. The instrument has had a full setup with Larsen strings, rosewood pegs, ebony fingerboard and modern fittings and is compliant with modern playing standards and measurements.
The sound is round, even, warm and mature. It comes with a 2011 insurance appraisal of $14k issued by a top luthier. This is a rare opportunity to own a fully restored Old English cello at very a reasonable price.
Length of back is 739mm. High resolution photos available on request.
