A fine, quality cello, Caussin School made around 1880.

François Hippolyte Caussin was a skilled violin maker working in Neufchâteau, France during the later part of the 19th century. His instruments replicated the work of the great Italian masters, as was the fashion at the time. He is recognized as being one of France’s finest makers, in the same league as Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume.

Caussin was especially skilled in antiquing and developed techniques novel at the time.

This particular cello is unlabeled but is very reminiscent of his work. It may indeed be from the Caussin workshop or perhaps made by a contemporary. Either way, it is a stunningly beautiful, very finely made cello in a good state of preservation. There are some minor repairs, all of which have been completed to a high standard.

The cello produces a very fine tone; rich, bright and full of warm complex overtones and certainly not lacking in power.  It is very easy and a delight to play. Noticeable on this cello is it’s responsiveness when playing very close to the bridge.

The length of the back is 758mm. High resolution photos can be sent on request.
