¾ Cello by Anton Sattler, Silberbach, Saxony 1941 (GE051) - $8,900 Canadian
This is an exceptionally well constructed 3/4 cello from Silberbach in what is now the Czech Republic, made in 1941.
The Sattler family has deep violin-making roots in this area of Saxony with Ignaz Sattler, who died in 1840, being the first recorded maker. There are also listings for Ignaz Jnr., David, Albin & Josef in violin-making reference books, but not unfortunately for Anton. We could not dig up much information on Anton, his instruments are rare but he had undoubtedly learnt the family trade and was a highly skilled maker as evidenced by the quality of work on this cello. The instrument was likely not directly exported, but rather made its way to North America in the possessions of an émigré.
The cello is in first rate condition with no repairs. It is made of quality tone woods and has been fitted with a new carbon fiber endpin, Wittner tailpiece and Kaplan strings. The sound is lovely; warm & inviting and not inhibited by the instrument’s slighter size. It is a very fine instrument, the quality of which would be hard to find in a contemporary cello of this size today
At 697mm it is on the larger side for a 3/4 cello but small for a 7/8. It would suit either an ambitious student in the next stage of their musical journey or a devoted amateur of smaller stature looking for a more comfortable instrument with easier extensions.
The length of back is 697mm. High resolution photos available on request.
