G A Glier & Sons Cello, Markneukirchen c. 1890 (GE028) - SOLD
G A Glier & Sons Cello, Markneukirchen c. 1890 (GE028) - $6,500 CDN
Glier was a family of violin makers with deep historical roots in the Markneukirchen area of Germany. Family members are listed as guild members as early as 1723.
G.A. Glier & Sons was the name given to the workshop set up by Christian Gottfried Glier (1781-1855). The firm was subsequently run by his sons & their descendents who produced instruments of all levels, many for export.
This cello would have been among the workshop’s absolute premium quality output. The flamed maple used for the back and ribs and tight grained spruce used for the front is of the highest quality and would have been very expensive at the time.
The cello has had some repairs, mostly in the ribs, none in important sound affecting areas. The neck and scroll are not original and the cello has a new bridge, sound post and tailpiece.
This is a lovely well-made old cello with wonderful sound. It is very easy to play and would suit an appreciative keen amateur or an advancing student on their journey well into their university studies.
The length of back is 756 mm, high resolution photos available on request.
