Vittore Giardinieri, Oregon, USA 1975 (AM010)

Vittore Giardinieri (aka Victor Gardener) was born in Oregon in 1909, the son of poor Italian immigrants.

He made his first violin at the age of 19 and went on to become a prolific maker and important violin-making teacher, mentoring many apprentices over the course of a long career.

He was a ‘tree-to-violin’ maker; that is he sourced his wood directly from trees he found in southern Oregon - cutting, hauling, milling and drying the wood himself before setting out to make an instrument from his supply some years later. He even carved the fittings!

Initially self taught, he honed his skills by being friends with some of the finest makers in the US at the time including the much venerated Simone Fernando Sacconi.

Giardinieri was a fine maker and important figure in the development of American violin-making.

This lovely cello is in top condition. It has had a new setup with a shim put under the fingerboard to strengthen the neck, a fingerboard dress and new bridge, nut and strings. The result is a fine instrument that is very easy to play with terrific quality of sound and ample resonance.

Length of back is 750mm. High resolution photos available on request.
