Wilfried Leonhardt Cello, Mittenwald 2005 (GE047) - SOLD

Wilfried Leonhardt Cello, Mittenwald 2005 (GE047) - SOLD

The Leonhardt family has been violin-making in the Mittenwald region of southern Germany since 1926. The firm was started by Anton Dietl and succeeded by his son-in-law Wilfried (Fritz) in 1968. Fritz was born in Markneukirchen, another prolific violin making area and had apprenticed under Dietal. The family firm is now led by Rainer W.; Wilfried’s son, himself a highly respected maker and manager of the renowned Mittenwald Museum of Violin Making. The Leonhardt family is particularly known for its quality cellos.

This instrument is dated 2005, later in Wilfried’s career. It is wonderfully made, using lovely flamed maple and tight grained spruce with exact and demanding workmanship. It is authentically labeled and branded under the button with an image of a lyre; the Leonhardt family’s trademark and guarantee of quality.

The cello is in excellent condition with no repairs. It is fitted with Pirastro strings with a balancing Larsen Arioso ‘A’ string. It is fun and easy to play, responsive and presents a dark, warm sound somewhat characteristic of German lutherie.

Length of back is 747mm, on the smaller side for a 4/4. High resolution photos available on request.
