Louis Noebe, Homburg 1884 (GE021) - SOLD
Louis Noebe, Homburg 1884 (GE021) - $7,500
Louis Noebe was born in 1844 in Germany. He become an accomplished musician before setting up a violin making workshop in 1865 at Bad Homburg, near Frankfurt and working there until 1922. He made quality stringed instruments; well made and using fine tone woods.
An odd peculiarity of the violin making industry in the late 19th/early 20th century was the plethora of patents filed concerning innovations claiming to improve the sound quality of stringed instruments. Louis Noebe had his own invention which he coined ‘System Noebe’. This consisted of a series of modifications to the internal bass bar and a small second bass bar added.
This cello is a ‘System Noebe’ instrument made in 1884. It is branded internally with the date & ‘System Noebe’. It also bears Noebe’s label, initialed by him along with the number 385.
This is a big, powerful cello with lots of booming mature sound volume and projection. It is a little larger than most with a length of back of 798mm, so it might not be suitable for the smaller cellist.
The cello has lovely flamed maple back & ribs and a tight grain of spruce for the front. There are a number of repairs including a large sound post patch repair to the back, one on the front and a piece of wood added to the lower ribs. All the repairs are very well done, and stable. The instrument is in excellent playing condition and conforms to modern playing standards.
