German Cello Late 19th C. (GE011)
German Cello Late 19th C. (GE011)
This wonderful instrument was acquired by us with the understanding that it was made in Berlin (Berlin School), in the late 19th century. Unfortunately, we have not been able to verify that it was actually made in Berlin, it may have been only retailed in Berlin and/or been made in the Markneukirchen region of Germany - a more prolific instrument making region at the time (hence the nickname - ‘Ex-Berliner’). Sometimes it’s really hard to nail down the exact maker, especially as there are no labels or obvious clues in this instrument. One thing is certain however; the quality of wood and construction indicates that this is a very well made, attractive cello that would have retailed for a premium price. The cello is stunningly beautiful; a gorgeous auburn brown color with wonderful antiquing caused by years of enjoyment. Quality new geared pegs, a fingerboard & bridge have been fitted. An almost invisible shim has been located under the fingerboard to optimize neck projection. There are a number of professional repairs, commensurate with the age of the instrument. The cello exhibits a lovely warm, balanced sound that projects exceptionally well. If you are looking for a quintessential antique cello at a reasonable price, then this might be for you. The length of back is 760mm.
