Mittenwald Cello c.1900, probably Neuner & Hornsteiner (GE040) - SOLD
Mittenwald Cello c.1900, probably made by Neuner & Hornsteiner (GE040)
This cello hails from the town of Mittenwald in Bavaria, Germany and was made at the turn of the 20th Century. It is unlabeled but was most likely made by Neuner & Hornsteiner (N&H) who were the biggest makers in the area at the time. It exhibits all the characteristics of a Mittenwald build of the era which include a one piece bottom rib, fully carved under scroll and typical varnish.
The N&H workshop was founded through a partnership between Mathias Neuner (IV) and Cantius Hornsteiner in the early 19th century. It grew to employ over 200 workers at its zenith before finally going out of business in the 1930’s. Instruments from N&H are highly regarded for their quality of build and character of sound and are keenly sought after by players and collectors alike.
This cello is in very good condition for its age with few repairs.
If you are looking for a cello with power, then this one may be for you. Some cellos don’t really respond linearly with much more sound the harder you play them; this is certainly not true for this instrument! – It exudes clear, powerful sound and projection and as such is suitable for performance.
Length of back is 745mm. High resolution photos available on request.
