Czech Cello c. 1920’s (GE019) - SOLD
This terrific cello was made just after WW1in the Bohemia region of the then newly formed sovereign state of Czechoslovakia. Prior to its independence, the area was long part of the Austria-Hungry empire. During the war, Czech and Slovak speaking people fought on the side of the Allies and were rewarded in victory with the granting of a joint democratic independent state.
Democracy in Czechoslovakia flourished during the interwar years prior to the acquisition of the Sudetenland by Nazi Germany in 1938, Soviet control post WW2 and the peaceful dissolution of the country in 1993 into the Czech & Slovak Republics.
This region has a long violin making tradition dating back centuries. Post WW1 instruments from here are generally well made with measurements consistent with modern playing specifications.
This particular cello is very well made in the Stradivari pattern and in overall good condition. There is a repaired crack to the front, not in an important sound affecting area and some general wear consistent with age. It has been cleaned, restored and setup by a top local luthier.
The sound is powerful, lively and projecting. It would add colorful sound to a string quartet. It’s a great, honest 100 year old instrument that has history and will greatly outperform most modern factory made cellos in the same price range.
The length of back is 755mm. High resolution photos available on request.
