Eugene Chartreux, Lyon c. 1910 (FR025) - SOLD

This cello was made in the early 1900’s in Lyon, France by Eugene Chartreux. The label bears the Chartreux name along with initials B & S, L indicating it was made exclusively for Beare & Son of London, a respected stringed instrument shop & music publisher.

The original Beare company was founded in 1865 by John Beare. It split into two in 1892, with ‘Beare & Son’ continuing to make & sell violins and published music whilst ‘Beare, Goodwin & Son’, dealing in high-end stringed instruments.

This cello is a very nice instrument, a step above much of the French production at the time. It has been well used and is showing a bit of wear. There have been a number of repairs to the front including a repaired frontal sound post crack. There are no cracks on the back, ribs, neck or scroll. The instrument has been thoroughly checked over by a luthier; all repairs are solid & stable and string measurements & tolerances conform to modern playing standards. The cello is set up ready to play with top quality Larson A & D and Spirocore G & C strings fitted.

The sound is balanced, mellow and lovely – sweet in the higher register and deeply characterful in the lower. It is easy to play and would be terrific for chamber music.

A very nice antique French cello at a very attractive price.

The length of back is 755mm. High resolution photos available on request.
