This is a wonderful cello. It was made by the famed Jerome Thibouville-Lamy (JTL) factory of Mirecourt, France just after the end of the First World War. JTL catered to all levels of musician from student to serious orchestra player and used a range of labels to denote the quality of an instrument.
‘Modèle D’après labeled instruments were among their finest and most expensive, excellently made and selling for multiple times the cost of a student cello.
This cello is modeled after the famous Parisian maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798 –1875). Vuillaume was active at a time when there was a huge demand for old Italian instruments, their quality of sound becoming recognized as the finest. He made wonderful copies of instruments made by the Old Masters (including Stradivari and Guarani), the workmanship and antiquing of the absolute highest quality.
This cello is in outstanding condition having been restored by a top UK luthier. New pegs, tailpiece, end-pin and new Larson Magnacore (G&C) and D’Addario Kaplan (A&D) strings have been fitted. The sound has a rich complexity and is a terrific balance between warmth and brightness; there are no sacrifices here. The cello is of soloist quality, very responsive with projecting sound in all areas including the highest register.
The length of back is 750 mm. High resolution photos can be sent on request.
