Old English Cello Early/Mid 19th C. (EN015) SOLD
Old English Cello Early/MID 19th C. (EN015)
This wonderful old cello probably dates from the first half of the 19th C and was made in England. Unfortunately a particular maker has not been identified.
It was acquired from a cellist in one of Europe’s top orchestras, it being a 2nd cello, one that was used primarily for touring or when their principal instrument was in for repair.
This particular cello has been well loved, with multiple repairs and at some point it has undertaken a major restoration. There are a number closed cracks on the front, but these have been repaired so well that they are only noticeable under UV light - a sign of a skilled restorer’s hand. There are no cracks on the back, but a piece of wood has been incorporated to correct the back seam. There is a also a repair to the scroll and the peg holes have been bushed. For the last few years, this cello has been maintained and optimized for sound by one of the UK’s top luthiers. A premium carbon fiber end-pin has been fitted.
Old English instruments are often very well made and offer the quintessential mature, projecting tone that series players are constantly striving for. If this cello was relatively repair-free, it would list for many thousands of dollars. This particular cello has deep personality; it is complex, mature and unusually warm, yet still easy to play. I have really enjoyed playing this instrument.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an Old English cello with professional performance pedigree at the highest level and with lovely sound for a very reasonable price.
The length of back is 760 mm. High resolution photos can be sent on request.
