Bohemian Student Cello - Early 20th C (GE017) SOLD

Bohemian Student Cello - Early 20th C (GE017) SOLD

This is a very attractive cello, probably from the Schönenbach (Luby) region of Western Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. When part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, this region was known as the ‘Austrian Cremona’ because of its fine violin making tradition going back generations.

The cello is in very good condition with no cracks or major repairs. It is a deep auburn in color and has developed a wonderful patina with the many years of use. Why student? Although it is difficult to tell without examining the edges and interior closely, the front and back are made from laminate wood. Laminates were used at this time not just to save money on materials, but also to make a sturdier instrument that would require less maintenance. Laminate instruments rarely develop shrinkage cracks and are a good choice for players residing in particularly dry climates or for use as a 2nd instrument.

It would be unfair to compare this cello to a modern laminate, they are two different beasts. This one is very well constructed and superior in many ways.

The cello has a beech scroll and bears a mysterious eagle brand on the button (see picture). Unfortunately a maker using this brand has not as yet been identified.

The sound is very good for this level of instrument and price; warm and appealing.

The length of back is 755mm. High resolution photos available on request.
