Lawrence Cocker, ‘Tertis Model’ 1961 - Bench Made English Cello (EN20)

This is a bench-made, professional level cello from a very fine post WW2 English maker.

The cello is labeled ‘Tertis Model No.2’ and was made for professional cellist Lillian Tertis (née Warmington) and came down by descent through the Tertis family. It was her principal cello and was played in many of the finest concert halls, sometimes accompanying her husband, the world famous violist; Lionel Tertis.

Lionel Tertis (1876-1975) was an English musician who became one of the best known violists of his time with international recognition. His talent with the viola was such that composers broke new ground in producing works specifically for the viola and for him. Famous composers such as Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughn Williams wrote pieces for Tertis. Following his performance career, he continued to teach at the Royal Academy mentoring many of the finest violists. He was awarded the Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1950 for his service to the country and arts.

Lillian Warrington was Lionel’s second wife, an accomplished professional cellist, she played with Lionel on many occasions. This cello was made for her by Lawrence Cocker of Derby, England. It was Lillian’s principal instrument and was played in the finest concert venues.

Cocker was a very fine maker with a limited production of excellent violins, violas and the occasional cello. He was also known for inventing the split cane bow (a bow made of bamboo with a grafted pernambuco head).

The cello is in excellent condition with no repairs and a lovely deep reddish brown varnish. The bridge was cut and branded by the venerable WE Hill firm and the endpin bears the engraving ‘Hill, England’. It has been fitted with a new set of Larsen Magnacore premium strings.

The sound is what you would expect from a fine professional instrument; clear, very powerful, resonant & projecting. This really is an excellent instrument.

Length of back is 745mm. High resolution photos are available on request.
