Bubenreuth ‘After E.H. Roth’ c. 1960 (GE025) SOLD
This is a very good older cello from Bubenreuth, Germany in terrific condition. It is well made and expertly set up with new premium Larsen/ Kaplan strings and a carbon fiber end pin fitted. There are no cracks or repairs and the varnish is in very good condition.
This cello will appeal to the most discerning player who is looking for an instrument with very high quality sound. It is powerful, clear and projecting and with excellent resonance. It really is a joy to play and with the right bow, will display an amazing color of tone from the quietest pianissimo to the loudest forte notes. It is suitable for professional use.
The cello is labeled EH Roth 1920, but we feel this is incorrect. It is definitely a Bubenreuth made instrument probably of the 1960’s vintage and likely came from the workshop of one of Roth’s contemporary surrounding makers. Roth had successfully developed a brand, selling many instruments in the US and the maker/seller was likely trying to capitalize on this. The workmanship and sound quality are certainly on par if not better than a similar Roth-made instrument.
Bubenreuth is a small town in Bavaria that, following WW2 became a center of string instrument making after the expulsion of some 1600 German speaking luthiers, tradesmen & their families from Schönbach (now Luby, Czech Republic), part of the German Sudetenland. These émigrés included members of skilled generational violin-making families including Roth, Hofner & Siefert. The town’s instrument making industry flourished for a quarter century after the war before foreign competition challenged its success. Today it still employs some 200 people in the industry.
The cello is accompanied by a certificate from a top luthier with a valuation of $12k. The length of back is 756mm.
