Gliga Cristian Cello, Romania 2003 (RO010)- SOLD

This is a very good, top of the line cello from the much respected Gliga factory of Reghin, Romania.

From humble beginnings, the Gliga factory has grown into a large operation, supplying instruments of all levels worldwide. Their Master product line instruments are really very good, utilizing excellent tone woods and craftsmanship.

It is my opinion that Romanian instruments and makers sometimes get overlooked. Although the violin making industry there is comparatively new, being set up shortly after WW2, there are many highly skilled luthiers working in it. They source wood locally from the Gurghiului Valley in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania. The wood found here is excellent for violin making. Master makers working in Cremona, Italy sourced wood from this spot, hence it is known locally as the ‘Italian Valley’. It is said that Stradivari himself utilized wood from here.

The cello is in excellent condition with no damage. Top quality tone woods have been used and the workmanship is careful and exact. Cristian Gliga, the owner’s son supervises the production of these master instruments, hence the label bearing his name.

This cello has a lovely clear sound and has ample power. It is easy to play and displays clarity in the upper register. It is set up well and has been fitted with Kaplan A&D strings and Spirocore Tungsten G&C.

It was made in 2003. It is my opinion that the older Romanian instruments are sometimes better than the newer ones. The wood has had time to mature and manufacture was at a time when competitive cost pressure from China was not such a factor.

This is a very good cello which would suit an advancing student or keen hobbyist. Oddly, if it bore a ‘Made in Germany’ or ‘France’ label it would be selling in the $10k range. It is very good value.

The length of back is 755 mm. High resolution photos available on request.
