Werner Barth, Bad Brambach 1988 (GE059) - $12,495 Canadian
Werner Barth is the third generation of violin-maker of the Barth family with a small workshop in Bad Brambach; a minor spa town in the southern most part of Saxony, Germany. Prior to WW2, Saxony was one of Europe’s most important violin-making regions with established guilds, a tradition of apprenticeships and a division of labor among specialist craftspeople. Following WW2 and with the partition of Germany, Bad Brambach found itself just on the borders edge but within East Germany. This cello was made there just prior to German reunification in 1990.
This is an extremely well made instrument with the maker putting much care and attention into its construction. Small features like the quality of the corners and the iron mark with the maker’s initials carefully stamped into the button suggest that Werner was proud of his work and indicative of his level of skill and patience.
The cello is labeled, stamped and signed inside by the maker. The Barth workshop were not big exporters to North America, their work here is rare. This instrument was sourced directly from Germany.
It is in perfect condition with no repairs and has been very well looked after for the past 47 years. It is fitted with Werner’s original stamped bridge, a Wittner composite tailpiece and Dominant strings. The sound is warm, even and resonant, it is very easy to play.
The length of back is 750mm, high resolution photos available on request.
