Tyrolean Cello c.1845 (GE035) - $9,950 Canadian

We believe this cello was made in the Tyrol region of Europe either in northern Italy, Austria or the Bavarian region of Germany in the early 1840’s. Tree ring analysis of the spruce front revealed a latest date of 1832 and the wood being most likely from the Bavarian forest region of the Alps.

The biggest violin-making area at the time in this region was Mittenwald, Bavaria, however, we do not believe this instrument was made there as it displays a different method of construction than common in town at the time. This suggests a more southerly origin - Austria or northern Italy.

The back and ribs are made out of a lovely high-quality flamed maple and the front of a high-quality old tight grained spruce. All fine tone woods although we think the front might be a replacement which suggests an even older back and ribs.

The instrument has had a neck graft and interestingly the neck is made of a bird’s eye maple; found in early Bavarian work, yet the manufacture of the rest of the cello does not suggest this area.

The cello is unlabeled and has been fully restored; there are some repairs, none of them are in any important sound affecting areas. All repairs are stable and the cello conforms to modern playing measurements. There is an ebony crown above the button.

The cello is fitted with Spirocore Tungsten bass and Larsen treble strings; the most common string combination choice of professionals.

This instrument is highly resonant and produces a gorgeous, complex antique sound. It is a joy to play!

The length of back is 735mm; slightly small for a 4/4 cello but large for a 7/8 size.

This is lovely antique cello with a very attractive varnish and somewhat unique origin.
