This cello was made in the workshops of Thomas Kennedy and under his direction, and possibly showing the hand of the master himself. Kennedy was an important second generation London maker who apprenticed for Thomas Powell and worked briefly for William Forster (an instrument maker for royalty) before setting up his own workshop. His cellos are particularly sought after and are based on a modified Amati design. They are recognizable by their long center bouts and flared corners. Scrolls with deeply curved chins are also a feature of Kennedy’s instruments. He is thought to have made in the region of 300 cellos
The cello is very beautifully made, circa 1825, with a rich amber translucent brown varnish and a glorious two piece back of wood with an irregular curl. The table is spruce with regular, large growth rings. The cello is modeled on the Grand Amati pattern much admired by Kennedy and is typical of London work from this workshop of this period. The scroll is very beautifully carved and shows all the characteristics of Kennedy and his workshop. The condition is good with the instrument having been fully restored and the tone is excellent, of soloist quality. The cello comes with a certificate from a top UK dealer.
Length of back is 734mm. High resolution photos can be sent on request.
