1/2 Dresden German Cello after Caussin c.1910 (GE037) - $5,000 Canadian

This is a delightful little cello in amazingly good condition for its 100 years plus of age. There is no label inside but it was probably made in the Dresden area of Germany.

It is antiqued in the style of Francois Caussin, a French maker working in the Vosges region in the early 1800’s. Caussin pioneered a technique of applying antiquing to the varnish on new builds to replicate instruments from the classic Cremona period. It is thought that he blew hot wax in areas during the varnishing process. Even back then, owning an instrument that looked like an Italian master was popular and Caussin’s technique was widely copied, perhaps not with the same finesse.

This cello is very well made using top quality tone woods and is in remarkably good condition. Usually child’s instruments are recognized as transitional and are not made with this quality of materials and work, this one would have been owned by a wealthy family. Children’s cellos also tend to be abused during use and do not usually stand the test of time as well as this one has.

The sound is clear and surprisingly big for such a small instrument. It would suit a promising young player with aspirations in music and parents willing to invest in them.

It is on the smaller side of a ½ sized cello with a length of back is 628m. High resolution photos available on request.
