Breton Breveté Cello, Mirecourt, France c.1910 (FR026)

Breton Breveté Cello, Mirecourt, France c.1910 (FR026)

This wonderful instrument was made in the early 1900’s by the Jerome Thibouville-Lamy (JTL) company in Mirecourt, the centre of French violin-making at the time.

JTL used many labels to market their products and the Breton Breveté marque was reserved for some of their finer instruments. This cello is made utilizing very good quality tone woods.

This cello is in optimum playing condition after a restoration carried out by a top luthier. The restoration included a neck graft, bass bar replacement, repairing the back seam and two small cracks in the ribs and replacing the bottom block and grafting a piece of ebony wood into the bottom rib. A new set of Pirastro Perpetual cello stings has been fitted.

The result of the restoration is a wonderful, professional level instrument with mature, clear, resonant sound. It has attractive, moving appeal in the bass strings and clarity and liveliness in the high register.

This is a terrific antique French cello, set up expertly with a lovely voice.

The length of back is 755 mm, high resolution photos available on request.
